UGANDA LAUNCHES THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SANITATION AND THE NATIONALSANITATION CAMPAIGN.
(except from Daily Monitor 30.04.200 8)
The Minister for Water and Environment Maria Mutagamba launched the National Sanitation Campaign on April 22n, 2008 with the Theme “good sanitation, better living” (…). Below is the Ministers Message:

Now is the time for action. “sanitation for all” also implies “all for sanitation” So l;adies and gentlement. what do we want to achive in this year of Sanitation and how do we achieve it?
    > > we need to raise awareness o fthe importance of sanitation and its impact on the community, the government and other MDGwe do need to encourage government and our partners to implemnt policies and take action aimed at
meeting the sanitation targets. This calls for enactment and implementation of sanitation ordinances with full suppo0rt of the political wing
    - we need to mobilize communities. particularly womens groups, to change sanitation and hygiene practise through campaigns on sanitation & health education
    - let us take advantage of the large numbers of children enrolled in primary and secondary schools (…0 as a vehicle for social transformationand we also need to encourage tchnical, social and financial innovation. we must focus our full attention on developing new
technologies to dispose of and re-use human waste and wastewater.
several technology options have aleady been realised. for example ecologically sound re-use options like uirne-diversion toilets, which
enable the collection, hygienisation and reuse of urine and human excreta to be utilised as farm fertilizer. (… ;)
I’m convinced that the IYs will significantly contribute to the setting of polictical agendas.
    (… ;)
everyone has the right to sanitation. (..) we need a faecal free environment through “total sanitation”. (… ;)

the event was supported and organised by Water Aid Uganda.
