RTI International – A Better Toilet for a Cleaner World

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – RTI International has been awarded a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a toilet for use in developing nations that converts human waste into burnable fuel, stored energy and disinfected, non-potable water. RTI-Logo

RTI is partnered with Duke University, Colorado State University, NASA’s Ames Research Center and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory to develop a prototype of this safe, sanitary and affordable waste treatment system. Our team includes experts in engineering, water and sanitation, energy, and economics.

Gates awards US$ 3.4 million in new sanitation grants

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a second round of Reinvent the Toilet Challenge grants totaling nearly US$ 3.4 million. The announcement took place on 14 August during the Reinvent the Toilet Fair in Seattle, USA (see also the earlier post Winners of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge).

Winning grants:

Cranfield University This nearly US$ 810,000 grant will help develop a prototype toilet that removes water from human waste and vaporizes it using a hand-operated vacuum pump and a unique membrane system. The remaining solids are turned into fuel that can also be used as fertilizer. The water vapor is condensed and can be used for washing, or irrigation. Read Cranfield University’s press release.

Eram Scientific Solutions Private Limited A grant of more than US$ 450,000 will make public toilets more accessible to the urban poor via the eco-friendly and hygienic “eToilet.” Read earlier posts about Eram’s E-Toilet Delight here and here.

University of Colorado Boulder A nearly US$ 780,000 grant will help develop a solar toilet that uses concentrated sunlight, directed and focused with a solar dish and concentrator, to disinfect liquid-solid waste and produce biological charcoal (biochar) that can be used as a replacement for wood charcoal or chemical fertilizers. Indonesia, Tangerang: Taiwan funds community-based urban sanitation project

RTI International has been awarded a grant from the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement a small project to address low-income urban sanitation conditions in one sub-district in Tangerang, Banten Province.

The program will work in partnership with an Indonesian non-profit organization and in collaboration with the Environmental Quality Protection Foundation (EQPF) of Taiwan to facilitate community-based planning and targeted infrastructure improvements in the selected community and school districts.

This program will build upon the good practices of a well-regarded Indonesian non-governmental organization, the Institute for Integrated Social and Economic Development, better known as BEST (Bina Ekonomi Sosial Terpadu). BEST, established in 1995, has a strong track record of sanitation programming in Tangerang, among other locations in the country.

Tangerang has a large population of urban migrant workers, living in densely populated and low-resourced urban areas. Urban infrastructure improvements and basic services have not kept pace with the rapid population growth. Many of the low-income labor force live in areas that are poorly served with water, improved sanitation or solid waste infrastructure and services.
