Nepal – Lack of basic hygiene root of 80% diseases

Jan. 2: Lack of access to sanitation, basic hygiene and safe drinking water accounts for more than 80 per cent of diseases in the country.

The result is the country loses some Rs. 10 billion each year in terms of health expenses, loss of productivity and adverse effect on tourism due to poor hygiene and environmental sanitation.

Although 76 per cent of the total population have access to water, 54 per cent people do not have access to toilet and relieve themselves in the open. Similarly, only 41 per cent of the schools have toilets but only one-fourth of them have separate toilets for girls.
