WaterAid Nepal has produced this video as part of its campaign “School Sanitation: The Neglected Development Link”. Minister for Education and Sports, Gangalal Tuladhar, launched the campaign on 11 August 2011 by opening a photo exhibition at the Nepal Art Council, Babarmahal in Kathmandu.

  1. Urban sanitation and hygiene remains the biggest challenge in sub saharan Africa of the 21st century. Land lords have neglected the provision of sufficient , accessible and convinient sanitariy facilities to meet tenants daily life needs. On the other hand most of the provided facilities are poorly used and maintained to the extent where users of a water borne toilet find it expensive to afford appropriate cleansing materials of soft tissue which forces them to adopt news papers and hard materials which end up blocking the sewage system hence rampant sewage open flows.Due to lack of orientation most of urban migrants especially from rural areas lack knowlegde about types of facilities used in urban areas hence end up vandalising the facilities in the attempt to learn how to operate them.
    Most sanitation and hygiene actors have neglected key stakeholders and engage them to find the most appropriate sustainable way to address this challenge of our age.There is need for engaging the community to lead in finding the most appropriate technologies and how to operate and maintain them.People are the best experts of their daily life challenges,actions and direct benefits to them by themselves can be the best strategy to address sanitation and hygiene issues in developing countries. Health benifits are not seen immediate as issues of social welbeing and dignity in society.
    School sanitation and hygiene remains a challenge because most policy planners and managers of schools want only class rooms not toilets. The schools lack infrastructure development plans where sanitation needs are address to match demand of increasing schools population. Teachers and pupils share facilities in most schools and if not male and female issues are not considered. Issues of adequacy, accessibility, privacy and fuctionality contribute to promoting hygiene behaviors in society/community. sanitation and hygiene needs assesments, intergrated inter sectoral action plans and capacity building trainings , forums for sanitation actors needs to be adopted as a new measure in addressing issues of sanitation and hygiene in E. africa.

    I have a request to Nepal Government and all stakeholders in the school sanitation programme.
    Can the target date ( 2017 AD ) be preponed, so that it is achived before the next SACOSAN in Nepal??? Best of Luck.
