Kenya – Kisumu health officials face sanitary crisis as toilets fly

Public health authorities in Kisumu now face a new sanitation crisis — flying toilets and careless disposal of human waste.

As the officials are still reeling from a fresh cholera outbreak, residents are emptying their toilets and septic tanks and dumping the waste near schools, churches and private plots, fuelling fears of yet another outbreak of cholera in the town.

The reason behind the predicament is lack of toilet exhauster facilities.

Those with no access to toilets use polythene paper as substitutes, which they later dump along roads and in open fields, in a fashion similar to the ‘flying toilets’ of Nairobi’s Kibera slums.
