South Africa – People need water, houses and toilets

The total eradication of the bucket system and the provision of clean water and proper houses remain elusive to many South Africans.

Statistics South Africa yesterday released results of a survey conducted last year.

Despite numerous promises since 1994 that the much-loathed bucket system would be totally eradicated, 12percent of the people in the Free State still rely on the system.

In Gauteng 11,6percent use pit latrines, 1percent of people still use the bucket system, and 1,6percent have no access to toilets.
